On 26 December 1994, Air France Flight 8969 landed in Marseille, France. The plane had been hijacked two days earlier in Algiers, Algeria by four members of the Armed Islamic Group of Algeria. Their plan was to detonate explosives onboard over the Eiffel Tower, turning the plane into an instrument of terror and killing scores of French citizens on the ground in Paris.
